Top 5

In a previous post we discussed the project being costed at more than the budget . The cost planners have now taken a look and agree that we need to identify some savings. The reference group, PCL, Convic and Manteena have all been considering what is the most and least important to keep and welcome your ideas as well.

Please let us know - by a comment on this post - your top 5 and your bottom 5 things in the design.

Needs an enclosed Pool bowl with concrete Pool coping to keep it a destination park!
Also keep all the banks walls and street obstacles.
Open ended bowls and fly outs just seem pointless.

The structures could be more simplified (the sheltered areas), basketball court removed, rockclimbing wall removed, embankment area looked at.

Thanks for all of your efforts!

the skatepark design is really good. i think it would be a waste of money if any skate/bmx elements were removed.

the rock climbing wall should go along with the huge steel structurs sticking out of the ground. they look like they cost a fortune.

Top 5.
The Bowls
The plaza sections
The red banks
-Keep the park as is

'Bottom 5'
-The big black shade structures look expensive and useless
-The rockclimbing, I predict (drunk) people climbing up the top and falling off.

Please keep the park from the current design. Reduce costs by removing the fancy black structures

Top 5.
-Jersey barrier bank combination
-The Bowls
-The street plaza section
-Pool area
-white hump on the red bank

Bottom 2
-shade structures.
I would suggest planting some trees for shade, this would help to reduce the environmental impact of the park and bring wildlife to the area. Cheaper and 'greener' than the proposed black shade structures.
-the 2 stair ledge at the top of the red banks, i dont see the purpose of this.

I cant see any bubblers on the plans or taps. This is as essential as shade to stop dehydration.

There seems to be way too much shit happening OUTSIDE of the skate/bmx facilities. Like all the shading? Why can't they just have some sick trees or something, haha.

But yeah, get rid of some, doesnt have to be all, but some of the shading/metal/random objects.

The basketball court should go.

The rockclimbing wall should be taken out. Which would probably be used like, once. Take Weston Creeks rock climbing wall for instance, hardly ever used.

Cut down on all the fancy-schmancy colours in the concrete.

Also, the smaller ahh... island(?) in the small bowl part seems like it is over-crowding that area. But i don't know. Just a preference, i guess.

KEEP the bigger bowl and medium bowls exactly how they are in the design.

Theres my 2 cents.

Given the overwhelming response from the predominant user groups of skateboarding and BMX, the status of the flow and street elements should not (and as I understand will not) be under question. They're all linked to each other to closely - remove one and the entire design is compromised and the cost reduction is minimal.

It's disappointing to have to make these decisions as everyone has been stoked to date with the design, but I understand it’s essential if the project is to meet deadline in order to use the funds allocated.

Everyday use vs. minimal use
Savings identified:
1. ROCK CLIMBING WALL and soft fall area
(Although this is a great novelty there originally was no specific request for this feature and I can’t see it being used as regularly as other aspects)
2. AV projector and multimedia (cost to benefit ratio isn't there, perhaps this could be added later with a different approach, still install cabling capacity)
3. FEATURE LIGHTING
Stencils and other fancy displays would immediately take a back seat to standard lighting
4. SHADE STRUCTURES
Simple shade structures with minimal frills combined with the large amount of foliage that already exists will by far exceed any of the shade elements that exist at any similar Cbr facility
5. SIGNAGE
Reduction in any glitz and glamour aspects of signage

Maintain the Flow, street, stage, basketball aspects and investigate lower cost landscaping and planting. Consider other options for funding to add feature aspects at a later date. Clever engagement could source involvement from organisations with vested interest to maximise the youth plaza programs. Ensure the reference group continues so that communication with TAMs/ACT Government around maintenance and effective usage of the facility is not overlooked. This is a primary issue with existing facilities. Thanks. Luke Brown

Top:
- Bowls
- Flow and banks on flow
- Street course
- Colour
- Stage area

Bottom:
- Shade structures (simplify, not so many, add trees, a water fountain or tap).
- Rock climbing, agree with comments on Weston rock climbing area, never used, rock climbers like walls higher than what an unsupervised facility can have.
- Stage facility (make it very basic, no random plugging in = no vandalism, you need to book the key or something to use).
- Basektball, case in point is Weston, more skaters/bikers than basketballers use the courts for flat land tricks.

It is unfortunate that this will look like a skatepark more than a youth facility but if the non skate facilities are not being used or are prone to vandalism making the total cost over time greater then there is no point having them.

The overall design of the skate park is good.

The Flow of the bowl sections is good and the street plaza section provides a good alternative.

The coloured concrete could be replaced with regular concrete to save money.

A skate park does not need an AV projector

The rock climbing facilities at weston skate park are rarely used as probably would these.

The shade structures are not needed.

A drinking fountain is needed.

The current design should be kept by reducing the costs through minimising fancy decoration.
